The frame/edges and locking mechanisms are all aluminum, which give it its robust chassis, but then the larger, more flat panels of the luggage are in the lightweight, durable polycarbonate, which is far more resilient to scratches than aluminum can ever be.  That's why it can be considered the best of both worlds for checked luggage, which inevitably gets banged up over time when people load your luggage in and out of planes over and over.  Polycarbonate is so much lighter and doesn't scratch, but the aluminum gives it structural integrity and strength.
