When you have a lot of luggage, you can use the attached backpack by opening the zipper on the side of the Boston bag. It looks like a normal Boston bag with side pockets. You can easily convert it to a backpack by unzipping the zipper, so you can rest assured even if your luggage increases.
You can also use the backpack only.

My child used it only twice for a school overnight trip and a school excursion.
The backpack was not used separately.
